On Friday, October 18, 2024, M.C. Herd proudly hosted a vibrant celebration to honour Fiji Independence Day and welcome our new PALM workers from Fiji and other Pacific islands. The event was a true reflection of cultural unity and appreciation, bringing together our workers, management team, and the wider Fiji community.

The evening featured special guests, including Fiji Regional Community Leader Talatala Sai and his wife, Liti Yabakivou, and community leaders including, Tanoa Vakacavu, Vili Tabuakoto, Orisi Qaranvalu, Alumita, Seruwaia, Joan, Mereoni, Dimai, Susana Virivirlau, John Tamaanikaiyaroi and Saki Batikoula who graced the occasion with their presence. Tala Tala Sai shared inspiring words about the strength and resilience of the Fijian community, followed by a heartfelt address from Frank Herd, Owner of M.C. Herd.

Our Fijian workers showcased their heritage through traditional dances, heartfelt singing of the Fijian national anthem, and an electrifying performance of the Fijian Haka. Their pride and passion were palpable, leaving everyone in awe.

The celebration was also a feast for the senses, with our talented workers preparing a mouthwatering spread of cooked meats (hāngī), rice dishes, fresh salads, and delicious desserts. The warm and communal atmosphere was complemented by the generosity of FIP, who kindly donated drinks for the evening.

The night ended on a high note, with everyone—regardless of their cultural background—dancing together and celebrating the rich tapestry of diversity at M.C. Herd. It was a memorable occasion that not only highlighted the vibrant cultures of Fiji and the Pacific islands but also strengthened the bonds within our workplace community.

Special thanks to Afamasaga for her exceptional effort and organisation, which made the night a success. We also extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to this celebration of unity, culture, and shared joy.

Fiji Independence Day is celebrated annually on October 10 to mark the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1970. This day commemorates Fiji becoming a sovereign nation after nearly a century of British control, which began in 1874.

The celebration typically includes various cultural events, parades, traditional Fijian ceremonies, and public festivities. It’s a day for Fijians to reflect on their history, honor their cultural diversity, and celebrate national unity. The date also coincides with the anniversary of Fiji’s cession to Britain in 1874, making it symbolically significant as both the start and end of Fiji’s colonial chapter.
